Local Street Lighting Assessment
Project Objectives
- Undertake a review of the current public lighting in the community
- Identify key areas of the community which should be well lit
- Identify what upgrades, if any are required.
- Create an assessment which can be easily updated
Project Steps
1) Decide on the team to undertake the lighting audit
2) Divide the community into sections and decide which of the team will assess each section
3) Once sections and teams are agreed upon, each team should drive along their section in the community and record a video of all the public lighting available in that area that can then be uploaded to YouTube (example below). Click here for how to upload a youtube video
Note: Please ensure the team member on the passenger’s seat does the recording
4) Using the videos as a reference, create a google map to define the street lights in the community. Click here to view how to create a google map
5) The teams should also undertake a nighttime walking assessment of their section, taking note of
- Lights that are not working or may have poor bulbs which emit insufficient light
- Lights which may be blocked by trees or other infrastructure.
You can download this worksheet and fill in your results
5) Undertake a zoom call to review the results of the assessment section by section and identify areas where lighting could be improved. Click here to view zoom guidelines
6) Add the lighting assessment as a record to the eTownz Dashboard as an “Metric”.
7) Create a discussion among local stakeholders to gain their feedback and views.
8) Agree on a timescale to review and update the assessment (suggested every year)
8) Community Survey: Once the survey is complete its a good idea to create a simple community survey and share through social media and other means to ask the community for their ideas and opinions. Here is a sample survey form, members are free to copy this survey or contact [email protected] and we can duplciate and send a version of this survey form to you for use.
